Technopolis City of Athens presents the Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival *hybrid edition, from Friday 28th till Sunday 30th May 2021, and welcomes its avid fans and supporters both physically and digitally! On the very first day of our cultural sector, ATJF becomes the first live festival of this summer, thus confirming its role as a true milestone of Athens’ cultural life, and carrying on a tradition that has been going strong for 20 years now.

What’s on for this year’s edition? 14 acclaimed bands from 10 countries, unexpected jazz genres, a crossover repertoire, 5 live shows, 9 pre-recorded sessions, the option to live-stream all festival performances, and lots of musical surprises! And since it all comes down to music and music alone...ladies & gents, we present to you the line-up of the 20th Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival:

The opening show of this year’s festival may be live-streamed from Sweden, held by the atmospheric saxophonist Martin Wirén and his personal project Bear Garden, but it will most certainly defy all musical borders. The experimental and rather mystical music of the composer, pianist and researcher Anna Stereopoulou is up next, and will be followed by one of the most interesting bands of the afro-beat scene coming (believe it or not!) from up north: The KutiMangoes from Denmark! The day will come to an end with the performance of the multi-tasking and much-loved saxophonist of the festival, the one and only Dimitris Tsakas who will be accompanied by his band.

On its second day, ATJF opens with Federica Lorusso Trio from the Netherlands, a project that the Italian pianist Federica Lorusso came up with in 2018 and is characterized by loads of energy and groove, a mix of “traditional” post-bop with innovative elements. Then, a fresh wind will blow from Luxembourg with the Dock in Absolute trio and their constantly alternating music that balances between progressive jazz, classical music and rock, proving convincingly that it has hundreds of thousands of stories to tell…Right after, the SokratisVotskos Quartet, the unique Greek band which has signed a contract with the legendary Jazzman Records, invites us to "sketch the unknown" through a musical journey to contemporary jazz and blues stylings, Greek and Balkan soundscapes. Up next on the digital stage of the festival comes one of the most important modern jazz trumpeters, the American Marquis Hill, who alongside four outstanding musicians, covers his debut album New Gospel, thus introducing a brand new version of it. The second day closes with Antoine Karacostas Trio who will present us the lyrical personal compositions of their Greek-Frenchpianist, which reflect an open conversation between New York’s and Middle East’s contemporary jazz scene with Greek traditional music and rebetiko.

On its third and final day, the ATJF opens with Macumba quartet from Cyprus and their explosive compositions which – even through the distance – will take us on a trip to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean with sounds that bring Latin America to mind. Next to the “stage” will be the Polish band EABS (Electro-Acoustic Beat Sessions) ready to present us their own special interpretation of jazz, a renegotiation of the genre-classics combined with modern urban sounds; “a reconstruction through deconstruction“, as they themselves emphatically put it. Later on, the musical collaboration of the accordionist Roman Zabelov with the drummer and multi-instrumentalist Jan Šikl, aka Zabelov Group from the Czech Republic will carry us away with their cinematic compositions, whereas shortly afterwards the Botticelli Baby, a Germany-based septet that plays a ravishing mixture of gypsy jazz music and punk, has one sole purpose: to cause a stir and make us move to their tunes! The curtain on this year's Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival closes with  the award-winning Greek composer and drummer VassilisPodaras (aka Billy Pod) headlining the stage with his versatile, full and “therapeutic” sound.
